Marvell Technology Has Turned the Corner

Ockham Research submits:
After reporting better than expected second quarter earnings, Marvell Technology Group (MRVL) is among the largest gainers, up more than 4.5% midday. The quarter just ended saw the company earn 18 cents, which was better than the street’s expectation of 15 cents per share. Although revenue fell by 24% from a year ago, the top-line came in better than expected as well at $640 million versus $619 million. Sequentially revenue improved by 23%, suggesting perhaps the fiscal first quarter was the low point. The semiconductor-maker topped analysts estimates even though 11 of them have raised earnings expectations within the last month, versus zero analysts become more bearish. Furthermore, the results even topped Marvell’s own call in June to lift 2Q revenue guidance because of increased demand among various end-markets.

Most importantly, Marvell management was more optimistic about the current quarter as they raised guidance significantly. (See earnings call transcript.) They are now anticipating EPS in the range of 18 to 26 cents, whereas the consensus estimate had MRVL pegged for just 17 cents per share. They are also lifting revenue projections to $680 million to $730 million, much better than the $640 expectations. Perhaps most impressive was the companies greatly improved gross margins, which came in at 55% on a GAAP basis, versus 50.6% in the first quarter, and 51.8% last year. This improved profitably lead to free cash flow of $175.3 million or 6% better than a year ago and 33% better than last quarter.
Complete Story »

By Stockpickr Staff
Posted on April 9, 2009 The retail sector was in the news on Thursday after most of the companies in the space released their same-store sales numbers. Wal-Mart (WMT) reported that its same-stores sales came in up only 1.4%, Costco Wholesale's (COST) were down 5%, Target's (TGT) dropped 6.3%, and BJs Wholesale's (BJ) were off by 0.1%. The only name among the group that was trading to the upside in midday action was Target. On a brighter note, a few retail firms reported positive same-store sales numbers. Aeropostale's (ARO) same-store sales were up 3%, The Buckle (BKE) saw a 14.7% rise, and Hot Topic (HOTT) said sales dropped 7.1%. Out of this group, the only stock that was trading lower off the positive...

By Stockpickr Staff
Posted on April 27, 2009 In spite of the spine-flu panic on Monday morning, major indices were in the green, with the Dow lately up 0.5%, the S&P 500 up 0.2% and the Nasdaq up 0.2%. Travel stocks were falling, though, with Carnival (CLL) down almost 10% at midday on Monday, Marriott (MAR) down 2.9% and JetBlue (JBLU) down 7.7%. On the other hand, pharma stocks, particularly those that produce flu-related products, could get a let up from the virus scare. Gilead (GILD) was recently up 3.7%, and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) was up 6.6%. In other news, Verizon (VZ) beat estimates in its first quarter, reported adjusted profit of 63 cents a share (analysts expected 59 cents) and sales of $26.6 billion ...

Jeff Pietsch submits:

I think the most notable aspect of Monday's trade is how widely proclaimed it was. Even CNBC was looking for a "pause" today ahead of earnings season. So, the corollary observation is how orderly this pullback is on fairly light volume. Nevertheless, though we are seeing a pause in the declines at the midday, it's hard to imagine a scenario where we recapture the VWAP/ 5-DMA as overbought as we were -- with technicals and price well aligned, the day's trend remains firmly down, if not midly so. Next potential SPY (SPY) support is near $82 (S2). Complete Story »
